The Banyan Courtyard Entertainment

In the center of the Banyan Courtyard stands the iconic Moana banyan tree. This banyan was planted on site in 1904 when the tree was only seven feet tall. Now standing over 75 feet tall and its limbs stretching approximately 150 feet across, this Indian Banyan was one of the first to be registered on Hawai’i’s rare and exceptional tree list. Providing shade throughout the day and filtered starlight at night, this majestic banyan tree has become the iconic symbol of the Moana Surfrider.

The Banyan Courtyard at the Moana Surfrider is an ideal spot for guests and Kama’iana to enjoy their afternoons amidst live entertainment and the relaxing waves of Waikiki. Talented local musicians such as Randy Allen and the David & Kamuela Duo will delight guests with their performances of traditional Hawaiian music, Hapa-Haole, and Island Contemporary. Guests can enjoy live afternoon entertainment daily from 12:00pm to 2:30pm.

The new evening entertainment program complements the popular Westin evening ritual Unwind, which features the tastes, sights and sounds of Hawai‘i.  The Unwind program has been rolled across all Westin Hotels & Resorts worldwide and each hotel’s program is tailored to the unique local culture and environment. Unwind evening entertainment is offered nightly in the Banyan Courtyard from 5:30pm to 10:00pm and features a Hawaiian duo, hula, acoustic guitar and contemporary Hawaiian soloists.

The new entertainment options are a revival of the resorts legendary live performances in the past. The world-famous “Hawaii Calls” radio program, created in 1935 featured live musical performances from the Banyan Courtyard that were broadcasted to radio stations all over the world. Hosted by Webley Edwards, the show featured musical talents like Alfred Apaka, Haunani Kahalewai, Nina Keali'iwahamana, Boyce Rodrigues, Lani Custino, and Pua Almeida. Hawaii Calls was immensely popular and is often credited with making many Hawaiian performers household names across the U.S. and around the world.
