Mission Statement:

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa is dedicated to developing innovative and comprehensive resource management programs that result in improving the quality of the environment while providing significant cost savings.

Environmental Commitment

Today’s Moana Surfrider pays tribute to its ancestors, who for hundreds of years valued conservation, and to the malihini kipa (respected guests), where both the management and staff strive to create examples and set the standards for the next generation by being environmentally responsible.  This is important so Hawaii’s keiki (children) can enjoy the same wonders that people working at and staying at the Moana Surfrider enjoy today.  As taught by the kupuna (Hawaiian elders), the single most important value in Hawaiian culture is to respect the 'aina (land).  From the land, all life springs forth and so it must be nurtured, protected and cared for.  The Moana Surfrider is committed to protecting our environment and preserving our precious natural resources.  Being green is not a definitive objective but it’s a process of striving to become “greener,” where people are dedicated to the process and promise to promote a lifestyle that ensures our environmental impact is lessened and our carbon footprint is minimized.  The Moana Surfrider has integrated various green business methods and also encourages guests and employees to do the same as they 'ima loa (explore) this beautiful island oasis on which the Moana Surfrider sits.  Moana Surfrider’s three key words are:  reduce, reuse and recycle.  Moana Surfrider supports local vendors and merchants by purchasing locally grown, sustainable products to provide our guests with a uniquely Hawaiian experience.  By blending a luxury resort experience with environmentally responsible practices, Moana Surfrider offers its guests the peace of mind they are staying with a hotel that has cares as much about the future of our world as we care about delivering a world-class guest experience.

Behind the scenes, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Waikiki, including Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Sheraton Waikiki, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, and The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki, are employing practices that cover all aspects of front and back of house operations from lighting and water efficiency, to waste management and indoor air quality.

As these iconic properties usher Waikiki into a new era with over $750 million in renovations already completed or in the works as part of Starwood and Kyoya Hotels & Resorts, LP’s “Inspiration Renewed” initiative, green programs are at the forefront and the top of the agenda of each general manager.  It is a commitment to translate cost savings to the end user, support local businesses, and make a better environment for future generations.
